The Orton-Gillingham Approach is a direct, explicit, multisensory, structured, sequential, diagnostic, and prescriptive way to teach reading, writing, and spelling. It is an effective approach, especially for those with dyslexia. The focus of the lessons is always based on the individualized needs of the learner, and the introduction of new material is based on their readiness. Orton-Gillingham lessons continuously build upon mastery of prior content, working at the pace of the learner. Other resources used to support students include materials from UFLI (University of Florida Literacy Institute) .

Garden Isle Reading offers after school tutoring at Island School in Lihue, HI. I provide individual, in-person reading, spelling, and handwriting tutoring using the Orton-Gillingham (OG) method. These sessions occur at least twice per week but can happen more frequently depending on the learner’s needs. I begin with an intake and initial assessment to determine what the learner already knows. From there, the OG method is implemented through carefully and individually constructed lessons for each learner and moves systematically at the learner’s pace.
*Although tutoring takes place at the Island School campus, Garden Isle Reading is not associated with Island School.
